Clea Mallinson graduated in Film Honours from UCT in 2004 and won a student short film competition with “Addicted to Popcorn.” Initially working in wildlife TV, she literally went from filming cow-pats to attending the Cannes Film Festival after taking first prize in a French Embassy short animation competition.

She wrote and directed an isiXhosa SABC TV documentary, “Pinky and the Computers” in 2009. In 2010 she graduated with an MA in screenwriting from the Huston School of Film & Digital media, National University of Ireland, Galway, and received a scholarship to attend a screenwriting course at UCLA.

Writing and directing animation, fiction and quirky documentary, exploring themes of self-expression, connection and the environment is what Clea loves to do. She has over 13 years of experience as a video editor and has honed her animation writing skills at The StoryTeller Pod's online courses.

She has pitched twice at Animation Du Monde at the Annecy International Animation Festival and has received two development grants for short animated films from the National Film and Video Foundation. In 2017 she completed a residency at Ciclic animation.

In recent years she has worked full time at Sunrise Productions and Triggerfish Animation editing a Youtube TV series, feature film and Netflix's first ever African animated series.
